  • Outcomes

    Graduates of the National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing are able to:

    • demonstrate knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of animals
    • follow safe working practices and standards in the animal facility
    • collect and test diagnostic samples from companion animals, and prepare the samples for dispatch
    • demonstrate knowledge of ethical behaviour in relation to animals
    • monitor health and provide husbandry for cats and dogs
    • demonstrate and apply knowledge related to animal facility environmental hygiene
    • handle and transport injured companion animals
    • describe parturition and after care of companion animals
    • prepare animal patients for surgery
    • conduct preliminary clinical examination of an animal
    • demonstrate and apply knowledge of professional behaviour for Veterinary Nurses

    The National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing Level 5 is a 95 credit full-time programme, (or equivalent part-time) programme.  The programme is a follow-on programme from the National Certificate in Animal Care.

    The entry criteria for the National Certificate in Veterinary Nursing are:

    • Successful completion of all compulsory courses in the National Certificate in Animal Care.
    • Students must demonstrate a willingness to work with animals of all species and to take part in learning which may involve dissection of cadavers and handling of animal body parts and fluids.
    • Students will be required to declare any previous criminal convictions and EIT may require a police clearance check.  The form at the back of the Programme Information (downloadable at the top (right) of this page) must be completed and returned to EIT with the application from. 

    If the applications exceed the number of places available on the programme, applicants for the full-time programme who meet the entry criteria will be interviewed.  A 20-30 minute interview will be conducted by a small panel of lecturers from the programme.

    • competence in spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively
    • the ability to describe the attributes required for working with animals
    • a commitment to complete the programme
    • higher academic qualifications than specified in the entry criteria above
    • good references from work placement supervisors gained while completing the National Certificate in Animal Care
    • extra relevant work or other experience
    • personal qualities including responsibility and teamwork 

    Applicants will be required to bring to the interview evidence that supports the above criteria.
