  • Outline

    This introductory programme in reo and tikanga Māori will enable people who are at the very beginning of their Māori language learning journey to make basic greetings in Māori; conduct a short and simple conversation in Māori and conduct themselves appropriately in Māori cultural settings.

    • Listening, speaking, reading and writing language skills
    • Māori cultural concepts through language and learning traditional customs and practices

  • Entry

    • Applicants will require a minimum of 8 credits NCEA Level 1 from any literacy sub field or domain, and a minimum of 8 credits NCEA Level 1 from any numeracy sub field or domain For the literacy standard, these skills can be assessed in English or Te Reo Māori. For the numeracy standard these skills can be assessed in maths or pāngarau (Māori immersion maths).
    • For applicants without these NCEA credits or equivalent: a pass in School Certificate English and Mathematics meets the academic entry requirements, as do NQF qualifications of an equivalent or higher level which demonstrate achievement in these discipline areas.
    • Students over 20 are classified as mature students. Mature students with life skills and/or work experience who do not meet the stated entry requirements but have the equivalent ability and experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Embedded Qualifications

    • National Certificate in Māori (Te Waharoa) Level 2
      (It is noted that this award occurs automatically with no consideration of course or programme design required.)
