  • Outline

    This entry level programme provides basic skills in farming situations involving the handling and treatment of livestock, working with both cattle and sheep; use of vehicles; workshop skills and fencing; working safely and maintaining health on a farm; knowledge of pasture and plant control; knowledge of stock feeding and digestion and working a farm dog.

    On successful completion of this programme, graduates will have the skills and knowledge to be able to independently apply basic skills in farming situations involving:

    • The handling and treatment of livestock, working with both cattle and sheep
    • Working safely and maintaining their health on the farm
    • Safe use of vehicles
    • Knowledge of pasture and plant control
    • Workshop skills
    • Fencing

    Learners must meet one of the following criteria:

    • Registered with Work and Income, aged 18 or 19, with low qualifications and have left school in the last 26 weeks.
    • Registered with Work and Income as an unemployed job seeker for at least 26 weeks, and have low qualifications
    • Registered with Work and Income for fewer than 26 weeks, or a client of Work and Income with low qualifications and assessed by Work and Income as being at risk of long-term unemployment.
