  • Outcomes

    Massage therapies are experiencing increasing popularity world-wide. The Certificate programme is designed to provide practical skills and theoretical knowledge in the areas of relaxation, sports and health massage. It is also ideal as a stepping stone into the Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy programme for people who feel they lack the grounding in science and/or formal education.

    The courses studied include all the competencies and skills required to practice entry level massage.

    This qualification may lead to other tertiary study in the health and sports field e.g. Diploma in Therapeutic and Sport MassageBachelor of Recreation and Sport or Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy.

  • Outline

    This programme provides practical and theoretical knowledge and skills in sport and therapeutic massage.  Completion of this programme allows entry into the Diploma in Therapeutic and Sport Massage, a further 17 weeks of full time study.

    Classes are held Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm, over 17 weeks.

  • Entry

    A personal interview may be part of the application process. 

    Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: 

    Standard Entry 

    • School Leavers

           Minimum of four years secondary education.  

    • Mature Students

          20 years or over with an aptitude and interest in massage therapy. 

    English Language Entry Requirement

    Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency.  This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on or IELTS (5.0 Academic) tests, completion of accepted international equivalents, or completion of an EIT Hawke’s Bay assessment.

  • Career Opportunities

    For a trained massage practitioner employment opportunities are varied and exciting.  For those wanting the “hands-on” approach, there is work in fitness centres, gymnasiums, cruise ships and with sports teams.  Being self-employed, offering relaxation massage in clinics or at home is also an option. 

    Possible jobs and career opportunities can include:

    • health care facilities
    • the beauty industry
    • further study (eg, towards a Diploma in Therapeutic and Sport Massage, Bachelor of Recreation and Sport, or Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapy).
