Tourism and travel studies lead to great job

December 5, 2013

Jenna MabeyLoving her job at Hawke’s Bay Tourism, Jenna Mabey says she definitely made the right choice in studying EIT’s Diploma in Tourism and Travel.

Jenna achieved good grades in tourism and travel classes at Dannevirke High School, so she decided to make that her career path.

“I love meeting new people and helping them,” she says. “I’m interested in cultures and countries so I thought working in this area would be good.”

Jenna says she was made to feel welcome at EIT.

“The tutors were absolutely amazing. They were passionate about what they were teaching and that made it easier to learn. And they were friendly – you had a quite different relationship with them compared to teachers at school.”

Diploma students undertake a 40-hour work experience in their second year, and Jenna’s was at Hawke’s Bay Tourism.

“I was asked to come back at the end of November to help with F.A.W.C!” she says of the Food and Wine Classic, a 10-day series of events that includes master classes, degustation dinners and private chefs cooking in homes.

Then, in December she was invited back part-time and in January started full-time at Hawke’s Bay Tourism.

“It was so good, within two months of leaving EIT I had a job.”

Jenna thinks she will stay where she is for as long as she can and get some savings behind her for overseas travel.

Her dream destinations include London and Paris, where she would like to see the drawcard attractions. In the meantime, she is looking forward to indulging her wanderlust with a summer trip to Thailand for a three-week holiday with friends.
